The Enchanted Tiki Room at the Parks |
|
Mar 11, 2010 - 10:14 PM - by Exprcoofto
|
Tikis have been around for a long long time now, and have always been popular amongst many people around the globe. However, when Walt Disney took a swing at it, he only made it popular. Walt was looking for a new attraction to use his newly patented "Audio Animatronics", so WED (now Walt Disney Imagineering) created the concept for some kind of restaurant with a show inside. This concept stayed through until initial testing took place in the park. Immediately they noticed that nobody hardly touched their meals, instead, they were enjoying the show that was going on above their heads. So they decided to take out the restaurant concept and leave it as a simple show - and it was a smash hit. (Did you know the Magic Fountain in the middle of the room was actually a coffee station for the wait staff?) The show can be additionally found at the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland with their own unique styles. Disneyland remains the only one with the original "Tropical Serenade" theme which started when the attraction opened in 1963. If you are also curious, the original song was written by the Sherman Brothers who also wrote the lyrics to it's a small world and famous Disney films like Winnie the Pooh and Mary Poppins. Just today the Sherman Brothers received their very own window on Main Street U.S.A, at Disneyland. This is the highest honor in any Disney Park.
Over at the Magic Kingdom, things are a bit different now. When the attraction opened in 1971 with the opening of Magic Kingdom, it too hosted the Tropical Serenade, however, in the late 90s attendance was significantly low so Walt Disney Imagineering decided to take a look at it and re-image in. It reopened in 1998 as "The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management". Iago and Zazu are now the "new" owners and have a bit of an argument during the show. Today, the attraction is back down to its low attendance, most likely because the "pop" overlay theme is not very popular any longer. However, there are no indications of any sort of refurb coming in the foreseeable future.
Tokyo Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room has seen the most changes. It opened originally in 1983 with the same Tropical Serenade (in Japanese), however, in 1999 it was redone and renamed to "The Enchanted Tiki Room: Now Playing Get The Fever!". This new show removed the classic four hosts and introduced four new ones, one of them was the first female bird to host any Tiki Room. This redo was not a smash hit, but in recent years Stitch has become very popular with the Japanese. Walt Disney Imagineering took this opportunity to re-imagine this attraction once again. In 2008, it reopened as "The Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents Aloha e Komo Mai!". The show starts out similar, but Stitch comes up in the middle of the show can sings along with all the Tiki birds, idols, and gods. They also added presence of Stitch outside of the Tiki Room in the Enchanted Gardens.
We hope you enjoyed this world wide look at the Enchanted Tiki Room!
Oh yeah, one last thing... you may be wondering whats up with my name change. Well, you asked for it, so here it is:
I look back over the past five years and I'm amazed. I still remember the the joy I had coming home and playing VMK in late 2005 and early 2006. I was new to the internet world and VMK. My story continued to develop over the years as I became a huge fan of VMK. However, a new dawn is upon us. A new decade, a new website, new games, and much more. I've decided that it's time for me to close the chapter of my life as "slinkyman". It's a name that is very close to my heart. It's on my school ring next to the cancer ribbon, it's on nearly every aspect of my online "life", and it's on some of my special VMK related real items. However, as Walt once said, "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."
From now on, I'll be known as Exprcoofto. Now I'm sure you're asking why I'm switching to such a weird name. Well, my goal is to eventually become an Imagineer, and in doing so, you must have a creative mind. Last summer I was thinking about a good name that relates to my love for the Disney Parks, specifically EPCOT. Bingo, that's it. It's right inside of the word EPCOT! I've taken the first two letters from what EPCOT really means: Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (Ex Pr Co Of To). Now since I've had the name "slinkyman" for nearly 5 years, I'll still be answering to anyone who calls me slinkyman or more notably, ink. Sadly, there isn't a short nickname for "Exprcoofto", so calling me ink will continue to make it easy and simple. Oh, and if you're wondering how to pronounce "Exprcoofto", keep wondering... it's open for everyones own interpretation.
Until next time,

Disney News Round-Up - (3/10/10) |
|
Mar 10, 2010 - 9:17 PM - by Exprcoofto
|
Disney News Round-Up is an occasional homepage post you will start to see. Because Disney News is spread out over a long period of time, there is no way to make Disney News Round-up a scheduled thread. Fortunately, there is a lot of great news worthy items to discuss today including Disney Movies like TRON & Alice in Wonderland, the new Premier Passport ticket at the parks, and the Disney Companies' overall success of the "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program. So enough chit chat, let's get right into the action!
I'm sure a lot of you have already seen the amazing world created by visionary Tim Burton called Underland, or a lot of you are planning to go see it. Besides "Alice in Wonderland" being a fantastic movie, it also proved to be extremely strong in the Box Office. In fact, it's ranked #6 overall for the largest gross for an opening weekend and is #1 in March & 3D. And if you haven't yet seen it and you are wondering why it did so well, then I suggest you go see it. It's a bit bizarre, however, that is exactly what makes a classic Tim Burton film so great. I'm sure mostly everyone has seen the trailer and many interviews (or the movie already) but for those who haven't, here is a look at Alice in Wonderland:
Some of you who saw Alice in Wonderland might have caught the 3D preview for another highly anticipated Disney movie coming out this December. That's right, I'm talking about TRON Legacy. This film has been getting quite a bit of buzz recently. Most of you have probably never seen the original 1982 TRON film, and if you haven't, you really should. The graphics and effects are nothing like what is possible in modern Hollywood, but the storyline makes up for it. In order to get a better understanding for TRON Legacy, its important to watch the original. Honestly, the first time I saw the original Tron movie was a couple months ago, and I loved it. Many TRON & Disney fans can't wait for it, and the new trailer was a complete helping of awesomesauce. Take a look:
Leaving TRON Legacy, we arrive at the Disney Parks & Resorts section. Many fans are predicting that TRON Legacy will be a smash hit with the box office, and in doing so, they're also "Armchair Imagineering" their own ideas for a TRON attraction. Some ideas include theming the arcades next to Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom & Disneyland to "Flynn's Arcade" or placing a light cycle ride on Disneyland's old PeopleMover Track. Other ideas include a new thrill ride E-Ticket for Magic Kingdom where the Indy Speedway is or where Stitch's Great Escape is. Regardless of speculation, there is confirmation of some TRON invasion in the parks. No, it's not a new ride, it's a re-themed ride. The monorails on the EPCOT loop will be transformed into "TRONORAILS" in which they will be overlayed with a light cycle theme. Here are the two images released by Disney today:
That's not all that is new at the Disney Parks. Over the past two months, there have been some new additions to Disney's Animal Kingdom. On January 25th an endangered baby White Rhino was born at the park. The baby weighed a healthy 178 pounds and was quickly welcomed into the Savannah at the Harambe Wildlife Reserve on Kilimanjaro Safaris. On February 8th, another new born was welcomed into the Kingdom. However, this baby is a tinny White Cheeked Gibbon Monkey. Like the White Rhino, this species of monkey is also endangered, so this newborn was a welcomed site to the caretakers at Animal Kingdom. Finally, on February 21st, a baby Gorilla was born in the public along the Pangani Trail. This is the third baby Gorilla born at the park. The first one came before the park opened to the public. You can currently find baby Lily with her mother out in the Pangani Trail. Here is a look at the three babies, make sure to click to enlarge.
Also new for Disney Parks & Resorts in the Premier Passport. This special pass is an Annual Pass that includes both Disneyland AND Walt Disney World. It covers the two Disneyland parks, the four Walt Disney World Parks, two Water Parks, and entrance to Disney's Oak Trails Golf Course. It also includes parking at both resorts & the park hoping option which means you go can visit multiple parks in one day. This pass is sold for $700 (approx. $722.50 after tax). Obviously this pass is not meant for everyone, it's meant for those who would be able to use it on multiple trips to Disneyland AND Walt Disney World. When priced out, it actually comes out to be a cheaper option if you are going to take those trips.
One last thing... the next D23 Expo! During the Shareholders meeting, they announced when and where the next D23 Expo will be held, as well as some other D23 News. Before we get to that, if you do not know what D23 is, here is a quick overview. D23 is the Official Community for Disney Fans. There are two different "levels" of membership. Gold costs $74.99 and includes four issues of the Disney twenty-three magazine (and a special replica gift from the Disney Archives), a member certificate, a member card (used for certain discounts), a bi-weekly newsletter, and the ability to attend special D23 only events. The Silver membership costs $34.99 and includes everything BUT the four issues of the Disney twenty-three magazine. If you have any other questions, check out the D23 website http://d23.disney.go.com/index.html
As for the D23 Expo, it will be held once again at the Anaheim Convention Center, however, its not until August 2011. Disney has decided to make this special Expo every other year instead of every year. This will allow them to pack in more fun to each Expo. The exact dates for the 2011 D23 Expo are: August 19-21, 2011. If you caught that, it's one day shorter than the first Expo. If you're not happy that there will be no Expo this year, not to worry. During the years with no Expos D23 will be hosting an event called Destination D. For this year, it's Destination D: Disneyland 55, a special event celebrating Disneyland's 55th running September 24-25, 2010. This event will have special presentations, exhibits, speakers, and more. Basically, it's a "mini" D23 Expo. There is currently no indication if this event will be held in Walt Disney World in the coming years.
Some pretty big news broke out last night from Disney Parks. The 1 MILLION goal of Volunteers was reached! That's right, 1 MILLION people have registered to/completed volunteer in UNDER 3 MONTHS! Disney was not expecting the overwhelming success of this promotion, but it appears that the limit will not be raised. I hope everyone had the opportunity to sign up for their Volunteering to receive their free ticket to Disney. If you're curious why the program is done, it's because a cap of 1 Million was set by Disney & the HandsOn Network (the company that controlled the Volunteering). If you are scheduled to complete a Volunteering opportunity then you'll still receive your free ticket once completed. This doesn't mean the celebration is done. Disney will continue to embrace Volunteering and the What will you Celebrate? concept at the Parks. The VoluntEar Cavalcade will still be performed before the parade at Magic Kingdom & Disneyland until a new celebration is announced possibly later this year. We'll keep you updated if any news arises on this subject.
We hope you enjoyed this look at the recent Disney News! More of these posts will be available as Disney News comes about.

Quote:
Last Week's Question:
Who was Iago calling a moron in the Enchanted Tiki room?
Answer: The Tiki Gods
Upon Iago's statement of him and Zazu being the new owners of The Enchanted Tiki room, all of the birds were surprised and worried that Iago's personality would upset the tiki gods. So, in an attempt to save them all from their doom, the tiki birds tried to get him to act kindly but it didn't work. This is why Iago upset the tiki gods by calling them morons. I think he learned his lesson, don't you?
I have randomly selected two people who have correctly answered my question, and those two lucky users will receive my BeeVee Trivia award!
Starz_Ravenclaw and TrueTrue3 Congratulations to both of our winners and good luck to everyone in this week of trivia!
